Advanced Dental Technology: Dental Implants

There are several options for people who have lost one or more of their teeth. One of them is to do nothing, but at Advanced Dentistry of Charlotte, we strongly recommend looking into dental implants.

If you don’t do anything about a missing tooth, then there are consequences that might otherwise be avoidable. Within a year of losing a tooth, the surrounding jaw bone begins to recede. That weakens the bone itself, and also results in a sunken appearance in the face. The more teeth that are missing, the more pronounced this is.

Dental Implants

Dental implants can prevent this from happening. An implant is a titanium post that is inserted into the jaw. It acts as a replacement tooth root, and stimulates the bone through the biting and chewing functions. This helps to preserve bone health.

After the implant is inserted into the jaw, it fuses with the bone. There’s actually a word for this process: osseointegration. It takes two or three months for this process to happen. Once it does, the implant is part of the bone, and strong enough to support one or more replacement teeth.

One implant can support one artificial tooth. Several can support a dental bridge or a full dental arch.
